abstract
this paper is a farsi translation of the first chapter of thesecond edition of “theory and methods in politicalscience” edited by david marsh and gerry stoker. thischapter was not included in the first edition of the bookpreviously translated by haj yoosefi. the new edition hasmajor differences with the previous one and the otherchapters in the book are written on the basis of the approachexplained in this introductory chapter. according to thewriters, despite what may seem on the first sight,ontological and epistemological foundations have a basicrole in political researches. thus, without clarifying his/herposition in this regard, a researcher cannot embark on aserious research. as a result, the writers present a three foldclassification of these foundations and try to explain theirdifferences by bringing sufficient examples. at the end, theyshow the importance of these foundations in researchthrough studying globalization and multilayeredgovernance. this chapter is translated because of itsimportance for political science researchers and lack of suchissues in the realm of methodological studies in politicalscience.
